Questions Carriers Ask
Clear answers on truck age, money down, combined tractor-and-trailer files, lease structures, and credit paths before you send the equipment package.
I run drayage at BNSF Logistics Park in Elwood. My runs are 30 to 60 miles round trip. Can I get financing for a used day cab?
Yes, that's a straightforward deal for us. Drayage operators running consistent cycles at a major intermodal facility have very predictable income. A used day cab in the $70k to $110k range fits our financing range well, and the revenue profile of intermodal drayage looks good to commercial lenders.
I have a bankruptcy from four years ago. I've been clean since. Can I get approved?
Four years post-discharge is meaningful. Many lenders in our network will consider post-bankruptcy borrowers when there's been clean credit history since the discharge and you can show solid operating income. You'll likely need a down payment, but it's worth applying to see what's possible.
Can I finance a refrigerated trailer separately from my tractor? I already have a truck but need a reefer.
Yes. Trailer-only financing is available. We can structure a standalone trailer deal. The minimum deal size still applies, so the trailer needs to have a purchase price of at least $50k.
I use a factoring company for my receivables. Does that change anything about how you verify my income?
Factoring statements work as income documentation alongside or instead of bank statements. If most of your revenue moves through the factor before it hits your bank, the factoring statements tell the income story more clearly than the bank account would on its own. Bring both if you have them.
What's the process for getting a second truck if I still have a note on my first one?
Having an existing truck loan doesn't prevent a second deal. Lenders look at your total debt relative to your income. If the business cash flow supports two payments, many lenders will approve the second truck. The key is showing enough revenue to cover both obligations comfortably.
Chicago moves more freight by rail than any other metro in North America. Six of the seven Class I railroads converge here, making it the hub that connects the coasts and splits the country. That rail volume generates massive intermodal drayage demand at the BNSF Logistics Park, the UP Global IV terminal, and the Norfolk Southern, CSX, and CN facilities throughout the metro. Every one of those containers needs a truck to get it to its final destination.
We finance Class 8 tractors and trailers for Chicago-area carriers. Day-cab drayage operators, OTR sleeper operators on the Chicago-to-Dallas or Chicago-to-Atlanta lanes, regional LTL carriers, and small fleets growing into more authority. Minimum $50k, sweet spot $100k to $150k and above. Application-only up to roughly $400k. Challenged credit welcome.
Chicago freight isn't limited to intermodal. The city's massive manufacturing and distribution base, spanning the south suburbs, the I-55 corridor toward Joliet, and the northwest suburbs toward O'Hare, means there's constant demand for local and regional trucking in addition to the long-haul and drayage work. Carriers here often cover multiple freight types across short and long lanes.
No city in the US has Chicago's rail concentration. The BNSF Logistics Park Chicago in Elwood, about 35 miles southwest of the city, is one of the largest intermodal facilities in the world. The UP Global IV yard in Rochelle handles enormous container volume. These facilities alone generate thousands of drayage moves per day, and the carriers covering them need reliable Class 8 iron.
O'Hare International Airport drives its own freight ecosystem. Air cargo volumes at O'Hare are among the highest in North America, and the time-sensitive ground distribution that follows air freight delivery creates demand for Equipment Options working short but tight timelines.
The I-80/I-90 corridor through the south and southwest suburbs is one of the heaviest truck corridors in the country. Carriers from Financing Options and the Will County logistics cluster work closely with Chicago-based fleets. Whether your authority is registered in Cook County or the collar counties, the freight market treats the metro as one operational area.
Illinois has a high density of carriers ranging from large national fleets to one-truck owner-operators. The smaller end of that market, including owner-operators scaling their second or third unit, is exactly who we serve.
To get started: your CDL, your MC or DOT authority number, basic business information, and details on the truck you want to finance. Three months of bank statements cover income documentation in most cases. For operators who factor their receivables through a factoring company, we can work with factoring statements as income verification.
Chicago's drayage sector in particular has a lot of operators who run through factoring, which smooths cash flow on the short-cycle moves. If that describes you, bring three months of your factoring statements alongside your bank statements and we can work with that picture.
Credit programs range from prime for strong-credit borrowers to Get Fleet Terms programs for operators with past issues. Chicago has a large number of carriers who went through tough years during economic downturns, had credit problems, and are now operating successfully again. We have programs for exactly that profile.
Chicago has excellent dealer coverage for all the major brands. Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Volvo, and Mack all have dealer presence in the metro and surrounding suburbs. New trucks from local dealers are fundable same as anywhere.
The used truck market in Chicago is also deep. Illinois has a large population of trucks cycling through fleets that trade equipment regularly, which means quality used units are often available. A three-to-six-year-old Class 8 with 400,000 to 600,000 miles, properly maintained, is still a productive truck for another three to five years of service, and it finances at a meaningfully lower payment than a new unit.
For Chicago drayage operators in particular, used semi financing on a solid day cab often makes more sense than buying new. Drayage miles are hard miles that accumulate fast. Getting into a capable truck at a lower entry point can protect cash flow while the fleet grows.
